Assign an AI Agent to a WhatsApp Number
An AI agent attached to your WhatsApp number answers inbound messages the moment they arrive — qualifying the lead, answering project questions from its knowledge base, and handing off to a human when it should. You build the agent once in AI Assistants, then attach it to the number here.
Entry pointAutomation → Integrations → WhatsApp
Before You Start
- A connected, verified WhatsApp number — see phone number linking.
- A conversation agent built in Automation → AI Assistants → Agents, with its conversation flow published. An unpublished agent can be attached but won't reply. See Create a Chat Agent.
Attach the Agent
- Go to Automation → Integrations → WhatsApp.
- Open the connected number card.
- Scroll to AI Agents.
- Click + Add Agent.
- Select the agent from the list.
- Click Link Agent to confirm.
Only one agent can be active on a number at a time — the active agent handles all inbound messages until it's removed or replaced.
Test before you attach: run the agent against your test phone number first (see Test a Chat Agent) so the first customer to message you isn't the QA process.
Remove or Replace the Agent
- Open the number card and scroll to AI Agents.
- Click the trash icon next to the active agent and confirm.
- To replace, add the new agent after removing the old one.
After removal, inbound messages stop getting automated replies; conversations in progress stay in the Inbox for manual follow-up.
How It Plays with Humans
- Conversations the agent handles appear in the Omnichannel Inbox like any other — your team can watch and take over.
- A User Handoff tool in the agent's flow hands the conversation to a human owner or team when the customer asks, or when the flow decides it should. See Chat Tools.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | What to check |
|---|---|
| Agent isn't replying to inbound messages | Agent status must be Active on the number card, and its conversation flow published in AI Assistants. |
| Agent you built doesn't appear in the picker | It's a different agent type — only conversation agents attach to WhatsApp numbers, not voice agents. |
| Replies go out but are wrong or off-script | That's a prompt/flow issue, not a connection issue — see Chat Agent Prompt. |
| + Add Agent is missing | Number management is admin-only; ask your admin. |
