Assign an AI Agent to a WhatsApp Number

An AI agent attached to your WhatsApp number answers inbound messages the moment they arrive — qualifying the lead, answering project questions from its knowledge base, and handing off to a human when it should. You build the agent once in AI Assistants, then attach it to the number here.

Entry pointAutomation → Integrations → WhatsApp

Before You Start

  • A connected, verified WhatsApp number — see phone number linking.
  • A conversation agent built in Automation → AI Assistants → Agents, with its conversation flow published. An unpublished agent can be attached but won't reply. See Create a Chat Agent.

Attach the Agent

  1. Go to Automation → Integrations → WhatsApp.
  2. Open the connected number card.
  3. Scroll to AI Agents.
  4. Click + Add Agent.
  5. Select the agent from the list.
  6. Click Link Agent to confirm.

Only one agent can be active on a number at a time — the active agent handles all inbound messages until it's removed or replaced.

Test before you attach: run the agent against your test phone number first (see Test a Chat Agent) so the first customer to message you isn't the QA process.

Remove or Replace the Agent

  1. Open the number card and scroll to AI Agents.
  2. Click the trash icon next to the active agent and confirm.
  3. To replace, add the new agent after removing the old one.

After removal, inbound messages stop getting automated replies; conversations in progress stay in the Inbox for manual follow-up.

How It Plays with Humans

  • Conversations the agent handles appear in the Omnichannel Inbox like any other — your team can watch and take over.
  • A User Handoff tool in the agent's flow hands the conversation to a human owner or team when the customer asks, or when the flow decides it should. See Chat Tools.
